We perform cryopreservation for you to preserve fertility, by freezing and storing embryos, eggs and sperm for use in the future. A vital component of any successful fertility programme,Prashanthi Hospitals has had an excellent track record with Cryopreservation since 2018.
Cryopreservation can be a difficult decision to make for some couples. However, it truly is a viable means to preserve fertility and have a biological child. It can also help other couples experience the joy of parenthood, through the donation of embryos, eggs and sperms.
SPERM FREEZING
Sperm Freezing via cryopreservation enables you to preserve your sperm for an indefinite period of time, and thereby preserve your fertility. The cryopreservation does not affect the quality of the sperm in any way, and can be successfully used for artificial insemination with the same degree of success as freshly collected ejaculate.
Why men consider sperm cryopreservation?
You could be advised to freeze your sperm if:
- Your spermiogram reveals fluctuations or a limited number of sperm in your ejaculate
- You are about to undergo treatment that could affect your fertility, such as cancer therapies
- You are about to have prostate or testicular surgery
- You are about to have a vasectomy and want to keep your options open – avoid the need for a reversal of the procedure
- You are a professional sportsman
If you have decided to go ahead with the sperm cryopreservation procedure, you would need to abstain from sex or ejaculation for 2 -3 days prior to your appointment to maximise your sperm count.
At Prashanthi Hospitals, we recommend that you produce your sample by masturbation in our semen collection room at the hospital, so that our embryologists can prepare and freeze it as soon as possible.
Please do not use a lubricant as this can damage your sperm, and make sure that you collect all of the semen, as the first portion often contains the most sperm.
The prepared semen is stored in straws in liquid nitrogen in our special cryogenic tank. You can opt to use the sample at any time, even after several years. You can decide for how long you want to store your sample and extend the period by paying annual storage fees.
How safe is it?
Some of the sperm are killed during the freezing process, but many usually survive and can be used successfully even after being stored for several years.
